Can Proteins In Those Who Exercise, Aid Those With Memory Issues?

Today we learned that 75% of the 800 people who died as a result of Covid-19, were 65 and older. By far, more older people died than younger people. And just as that news came out, a few days earlier in the Journal, Nature, a new study in which researchers injected blood from well-exercised mice into the brains of sedentary mice and what they found was astounding! The sedentary mice suddenly did better on learning and memory tests.

While what happens with mice doesn't always mean it will happen with humans, but researchers couldn't help but think, what if a protein from runners was planted into the brains of sedentary Alzheimer's patients and those with other memory disorders, and would they do better on tests?

This study was led by Stanford School of Medicine researchers who found that one protein, called Clusterin which is found in the heart muscle and liver, is responsible for reducing the inflammatory effects in the brain. Clusterin has a role to play in many diseases, including cancer and researchers feel other proteins can also be beneficial. They said more research is required.

The only part of the study involving humans was with the Department of Veteran Affairs Sierra Pacific Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center who is an author of the new study. Veterans, aged 50 to 89, exercised 3 times a week in which they did cardio and weight training. One of the doctors indicated that the results that are unpublished showed, the veterans had heightened Clusterin levels and did better in memory and story recall. Overall, their cognitive abilities improved.

The hope is that a drug can be developed that binds to cells that line blood vessels, as Clusterin does, and reduce inflammation in those with Memory Diseases. Other researchers indicated much more needs to be done, before a drug could be developed. The goal is to determine which proteins impact inflammation the most.
