Be Careful, it is Open Season

It is open season for choosing a health plan and small insurance firms are seeking your money. Please be cautious. If you come across an ad for low cost health insurance and you call the number on the advertisement, be suspicious. Since the Trump Administration has permitted insurance companies to offer policies that do not include all the benefits The Affordable Care Act offers, a whole host of smaller companies have spurted up offering tantalizing premiums without deductibles and copayments.

If you come across a salesperson promising you a PPO without deductibles and copayments, please do not purchase this policy!!! They will not pay for your medicine or services if you should get sick. I have seen this happen with a previous client who thought they were purchasing a PPO for about $440/month for he and his wife. When she had an unexpected emergency visit and the charge was well over $14,000, the insurance company paid a measly $50.

This is not health insurance. In my opinion it is fraudulent to be told you have a PPO and when you get sick, not have an insurer who steps up.

If you should be in a situation like this with a salesperson, below are questions you should ask and be happy with their answers in order to move forward.

1. What is the name of the insurance company providing this policy?

2. Will I get a copy of the actual policy?

3. Will this company pay for my doctor visits, medicine, and procedures?

4. If they say yes, ask for references.

5. How long has this company been in business and what is the retention rate of clients?

6. Has the insurer been fined, or cited by the State Insurance Department or Insurance Commissioner?

Here is to choosing a good policy and to Your Health!
