One Giant Step Forward for Consumers

Last evening the Berkeley City Council executed a historic vote by passing the country’s first check out policy to place healthy food near the register. This will set in motion a policy to improve food retail across this nation!!

The Center for the Science in the Public Interest was behind this effort. They have been successful in removing soda from schools and dyes from food. They are a 501 (c) 3 organization and do not take industry or lobbyist money.

In case you are unaware, food manufacturers spend more than $50 billion yearly promoting products that occupy visibly on shelf space in markets. The most expensive place in a store is the checkout line, where every customer must go. This is a huge win for Berkeley consumers. The only reason this got passed is because of the advocacy work of the Berkeley consumers who overcame giant food manufacturer lobbyists.

This was a total grassroot effort by consumers!

This new policy applies to food stores with more than 2,500 square feet. No longer will candy and sugar beverages be near the checkout space, instead fruit, nuts, beans, dairy, and whole grains will gain more notoriety.

If American’s can commit to eating whole foods instead of a processed diet of white flour, fried foods, sugar, and salty chips, we would be a nation of healthy people. Our bodies do not recognize some of the food we eat. We would have less obese people getting Covid, and more people healthy in their later years.
