How To Get More Fiber into Your Diet

On Wednesday the Federal Government released a report on longevity and how the coronavirus disproportionately affected Black and Hispanic lives. The report shows 600,000 Americans have perished and that Black and Hispanic people suffered the largest decline in 2020 in life expectancy than White Americans.

Between 2019 and 2020, Hispanic Americans life expectancy dropped 3 years, compared to Black Americans who witnessed a 2.9 year drop and White Americans who had the least life expectancy drop by 1.2 years.

This can change by getting vaccinated and eating healthy. Many Americans are not getting enough fiber and as a result, are experiencing symptoms of heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. What can you do? Eat more Nuts!!! Nuts contain healthy proteins, nutrients, and fats, including polyunsaturated, monounsaturated and omega-3 fatty acids.

Studies have shown that heart disease, cancer, diabetes, colon cancer, brain health and osteoarthritis improve when we eat more healthy fiber, like nuts.

For example,

Hazelnuts: have been shown to reduce inflammation because they contain high amounts of manganese which has shown to help fight osteoarthritis and certain cancers.

Almonds: have been shown to reduce heart disease and control blood sugars for people who have diabetes.

Pecans: Contain zinc and calcium which have had an impact on lowering blood pressure.

Pistachios: These contain B6 which regulates blood sugar, and they also contain two elements which control vision, lutein and zeaxanthin.

Peanuts: A legume, which improves heart and colon health.

Walnuts: A powerhouse nut that improves brain health in older individuals. They also boost heart health and lower the risk of acquiring colon cancer.

Eat a handful of nuts several times a week. Please do not over do it, because nuts are fattening!!
