I Thought Our Health Care System Was The Best in the World

This is a different time. The entire country is in lock down. Businesses, movie theaters, hotels, museums, sporting events, concerts, and seminars are all closed. Our health care system is in crisis. We can see gaping holes in the system, yet, we supposedly were told that we had the best health care system in the world.

What went wrong?

First, we are not a manufacturing country. We don’t manufacture all the gowns, gloves and masks that front line health care workers need. A lot of it comes from China. If you think we should rethink this, I would like to hear from you. Also, many of the parts for manufacturing ventilators also comes from China. We don’t control the process.

Second, not everybody has health insurance and many people lost their insurance since being laid off. The laid – off population can continue to receive health care through their employer through COBRA, or, The Consolidated Budget Reconciliation Act. The catch is that you are responsible to pay the entire cost of your plan, plus 2% for administrative costs.

My guess is that most people will not choose to do that given that many people will not have the money to pay for health insurance, rent, or mortgages, kids, food and drugs. This is no small problem given that already 28% of the existing population does not have health care insurance.

Now the Trump Administration has permitted insurers to write policies that do not cover the Affordable Care Act. Many are stripped down policies that only cover major catastrophes. I would not recommend most of them.

Third, our public health departments are in shambles. Public Health Departments need to be built up and funded. They are the backbone of community pandemics. There should be a Public Health Department in each city of the country. The fact that they have been defunded has left many with a bare bone staff.

Fourth, there are a whole lot of people who are sick with heart attacks, chronic diseases and cancer. I would like to hear your experiences during this pandemic. How are you getting treatment? Do you feel the health care system is available to support your needs? Is your doctor available to treat you?

Fifth, with Right leaning countries, from the US, to Britain, India, China, Russia, and Israel, the attitude is Country First. Rather than working together to find a cure for COVID 19, countries are working separately and hoping they reign supreme.

This is a time when collaboration internationally between scientists, pharmaceutical companies and biotech companies would benefit us all.
