The Virus That Never Stops Surprising Us

Have you ever wondered what researchers have learned about Covid-19 patients?

Well, here is a rundown and it is not pretty. Buckle up and read on.

1. In the first ever genetic statistical study by European geneticists, a link has been found between a gene and blood type. People with type A blood have a 50% chance of going on a respirator or needing oxygen. A Chinese study also suggested blood types play a part in who gets really sick, and they found that Type A blood was in that group.

2. People with chronic diseases, like heart and diabetes, have a higher risk of contracting Covid-19 and having a rough time.

3. Age also plays a part in contacting the disease. Older people whose immune system is weaker get the disease and a severe case more often.

4. Now researchers are learning that some people who go on respirators come off with debilitating conditions that will put pressure on hospital and rehab facilities. Many patients will have serious problems like post intensive care issues, such as cognitive, neurological, and muscular needs for years. It is estimated that 90% of patients on ventilators progress to having acute kidney problems with 25% requiring kidney dialysis. These people have nowhere to go and often remain in hospitals taking up a bed, that a cancer or surgery patient may need.

Please be safe out there and stay 6 feet apart. I am sure more data will be emerging as more studies worldwide are done.
