I wanted to bring you the latest information about hospitals that are best at treating cancer.
I read a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association on May 26, 2020.
And the findings are word for word from the investigation team which included the following people:
Daniel J. Boffa, MD1; Katherine Mallin, PhD2; Jeph Herrin, PhD3,4; et al Benjamin Resio, MD1; Michelle C. Salazar, MD1; Bryan Palis, MA2; Matthew Facktor, MD5; Ryan McCabe, PhD2; Heidi Nelson, MD6; Lawrence N. Shulman, MD7
I am not going to go through how they arrived at their conclusions, but following is the question they were trying to answer:
Question Are there differences in survivorship between top-ranked cancer hospitals and affiliates that share a top-ranked hospital’s brand?
The Finding: In this cohort study of 119, 834 patients who underwent surgical treatment for esophageal, gastric, lung, pancreatic, colorectal, and bladder cancer, risk of 90-day mortality after complex cancer treatment was higher and long-term survival was inferior at affiliate hospitals.
The bottom line is that the study found that cancer surgical treatment at top ranked cancer hospitals, as defined by US News and World Reports list of Top Best Hospitals, was superior to that of their affiliates.
US News rated University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston as the number one Cancer Hospital in their 2109/2020 list.
