There’s A New Tick Virus

In the New England Journal of Medicine, they identified a new tick disease in China that affects the brain and could affect multiple organs. I know what you are thinking. Do not bring it here. This is frightening!

Scientists analyzed patients who came to the hospital with a fever and a history of tick bites. Based on findings, researchers are calling the new tick disease Wetland Virus. In China, about 1 million people have the new illness.

This virus was named after a person who visited the hospital with an ongoing fever and multiple organ disfunction after being bit by a tick in Mongolia. It’s an orthonairovirus and is very different from Lyme disease. This disease was located in the Northeastern part of China.

Wetland virus has been found in horses, sheep and pigs. Scientists postulate that it could originate in animals, but spread by tick bites, but it isn’t clear at this point.

Symptoms include chills, fever, and muscle aches, according to a senior scholar at John Hopkins Center for Health Security. Of the 17 patients in the study, all had neurological symptoms that originate in the brain. This virus cannot be treated with antibiotics and doctors have not found a treatment plan that works yet.

Experts say Americans should not be worried about this, unless they travel to that part of China. It’s advised to stay away from ticks to lower your risk of getting any disease.

Stay clear of tall grass, leaf litter, brush and wear long pants and tuck your pants into your socks. Wear approved repellent.
