There is a lot of news going on in health care and I will highlight the findings below.

First of all, Covid-19 hospitalized patients are now receiving rhemes of bills!!! People are spending hours on the phone trying to get codes changed and speak with doctors and hospital personnel. They are frustrated and confused, and this is where a health advocate could be helpful. We know how to look at bills, obtain code changes, negotiate the bill down, and look for unusual charges. The reason codes of Covid 19 must be used is because the insurance company will pay the full bill, but, if the bill is not coded properly, the patient’s deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments will apply. This is serious because some hospitals are going after some patients’ estates to get paid.

Secondly, during Covid -19, most people did not go to a dentist, and allowed poor oral health to take root. The mouth holds lots of bacteria, microorganisms and foods that interact with other parts of the body. Eating a poor diet, destroys the micro-biome, and it is only recently that scientists have begun to understand how the health of our mouth is a microcosm of our overall health. For example, gum disease has been linked to Alzheimer’s Disease, diabetes, and heart disease. Third, gene therapy is moving forward! Scientists have partly restored sight to a blind man while he wore clumsy goggles and it is the result of 13 years of work. Scientists “built light-catching proteins in one eye” which allowed the man to partly see.

This is exciting news and was published in the Journal Nature’s Medicine.

This work will lead potentially to new medicines and replications.
